Mind & EverydayMental model
Everyone nods. Nobody is convinced.
Irving Janis described eight signs in 1972: illusions of invulnerability, rationalising warnings away, stereotyping opponents, self-censorship, illusory unanimity, pressure on dissenters. His countermeasures are useful – rotating devil's advocates, leaders speaking last, consulting outsiders. The empirical basis of his theory, however, is considered weak.
Useful: In meetings, have the most junior person speak first and the leader last.
