Mind & EverydayFact
Your nerves are far less visible than you think.
Gilovich, Savitsky and Medvec showed in 1998 that people greatly overestimate how well others can read their inner states. Liars believed almost everyone had caught their lie; observers were barely above chance. A 2003 follow-up found the same for talks: speakers felt visibly nervous while the audience noticed little of it.
Useful: Before a performance, remind yourself: others see far less of my shaking than I feel.
