Mind & EverydayHow it works
How to listen so someone feels understood.
Active listening goes back to Carl Rogers and has three parts. First, full attention – phone away, eye contact. Second, paraphrasing: “So you’re saying that…” and naming the feeling: “That annoyed you.” Third, open questions instead of advice. The other person corrects you when you’re off – and that is exactly where understanding comes from.
Useful: Before giving your opinion, summarise in one sentence what you heard.
