How to voice criticism in four steps without attacking.
Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication uses four steps: observation without judgement (“the dishes have been here since yesterday”), feeling (“I’m frustrated”), need (“I need order to unwind”), request (“could you clear them by tonight?”). Because there’s no accusation, there’s less to defend – and a better chance the request lands.
Useful: Replace “you’re messy” with observation, feeling, need, request.
