More witnesses, less help – usually.
A 2011 meta-analysis of 105 studies confirms the bystander effect: in groups, everyone feels less responsible, and everyone reads the calm of the others as a sign that nothing is wrong. Key exception: in clearly dangerous situations the effect shrinks markedly, because the situation is unambiguous.
Useful: If you need help, address one person directly: “You in the blue coat, please call an ambulance.”
