Mind & EverydayFact
Nobody noticed your embarrassing T-shirt. Really.
In 2000 Gilovich had students wear a Barry Manilow shirt into a seminar room. They estimated about half the people present had noticed. In reality roughly 23% had. The spotlight effect: you are the centre of your own attention – not of everyone else’s.
Useful: After a slip-up, ask yourself how long you would remember it if someone else had done it.
