Once a metric becomes the target, it stops working.
Goodhart's law: when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. Pay programmers per line of code and you get bloated code. Rate hospitals by waiting time and patients get parked in ambulances. It applies to you too: count steps and you'll pace circles in the living room instead of going for a walk.
Useful: Track metrics, but reward yourself for the goal behind them, not the number.
