The world's smallest state fits inside a city park.

Vatican City covers 0.44 km², roughly 60 football pitches, entirely inside Rome. About 900 people live there. The state has only existed since 1929, created by the Lateran Treaty with Italy. It has its own stamps, its own licence plates and the world's shortest railway: about 300 metres of track.

Useful: Statehood rests on recognition and treaties, not on land area.
