We know the surface of Mars better than our own seafloor.
According to NOAA, more than 80% of the ocean has never been mapped in high resolution or directly observed. Mars and the Moon, by contrast, are fully mapped in fine detail. The reason: radar and cameras can't penetrate water, so the seafloor must be surveyed strip by strip with ships and sonar, which takes decades.
Useful: New species and undersea mountains are still found regularly, not just in science fiction.
