The great garbage patch isn't an island you could see.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch between California and Hawaii is not a solid surface but a soup of about 1.8 trillion tiny plastic fragments, held in place by a ring of ocean currents called a gyre. From a ship you mostly see clear water. Nearly half of its mass is lost fishing nets; by count, microplastics dominate at over 90%.
Useful: Scooping it up barely works; the leverage is in rivers, fisheries and less single-use plastic.
