How many languages does the world actually have?

Ethnologue counts about 7,100 living languages. The distribution is wildly uneven: roughly 40 percent are endangered, often with fewer than 1,000 speakers. Meanwhile, more than half of the world's population speaks just 23 languages natively, including Mandarin, Spanish, English, Hindi and Arabic.

Useful: English plus Spanish reaches over a billion people, yet that's only two of 7,100 languages.
