In 1990, one child in eleven died before their fifth birthday.

Globally, under-five mortality fell from 93 per 1,000 births (1990) to 37 per 1,000 (2022) – more than halved. Main reasons: vaccines, clean water, mosquito nets, oral rehydration for diarrhoea, better childbirth care. Even so, around 4.9 million children died in 2022, most from preventable causes.
