The insulin patent was sold for one dollar.
In 1921 Frederick Banting and Charles Best isolated insulin in Toronto. In January 1922, 14-year-old Leonard Thompson became the first person to receive an injection – type 1 diabetes had previously meant death within months. The team assigned the patent to the university for $1: insulin should belong to everyone.
Useful: At 32, Banting remains the youngest Nobel laureate in medicine.
