Body & HealthFact
The first antibiotic was a lab accident during a holiday.
In 1928 Alexander Fleming returned from holiday to find a mouldy bacterial culture. Around the Penicillium mould, the bacteria were dead. Only in 1940 did Florey and Chain turn it into a usable drug. All three shared the 1945 Nobel Prize. Before that, a scratch could be fatal.
Useful: An accident only becomes a discovery when someone looks closely.
