Antibiotics for a cold are like a fishing net for mosquitoes.

Antibiotics attack structures only bacteria have – like the cell wall or bacterial ribosomes. Viruses have neither; they're just genetic material in a shell. Colds and flu are viral illnesses. The WHO counts antibiotic resistance among the biggest global health threats of all.

Useful: Every unnecessary antibiotic course trains bacteria to become resistant.
