Body & HealthFact
It's not sugar that makes holes – it's bacteria's waste.
Bacteria in plaque, mainly Streptococcus mutans, eat sugar and excrete acid. Below pH 5.5, enamel dissolves. Saliva neutralises this within about 30–60 minutes. So frequency is what counts: ten small sweets spread across the day are worse for teeth than one big portion.
Useful: Wait 30 minutes after acidic food before brushing – otherwise you scrub away softened enamel.
