Body & HealthMental model
Your immune system: a patrol and a special unit.
Picture two layers. Innate immunity responds within minutes to hours, recognises broad patterns like bacterial cell walls and treats every intruder the same way. Adaptive immunity takes 4 to 7 days but then builds tailor-made antibodies and T cells and remembers the enemy. The two work together: the first layer holds the line until the second is ready.
Useful: That is why a cold often lasts about a week: that is how long the special unit needs.
