Body & HealthMental model
You burn most of your energy lying down.
Think of your energy use as three items. Basal metabolism: breathing, heartbeat, cell maintenance, about 60 to 70 percent. Digestion: 10 percent. Movement: 20 to 30 percent, much of it everyday activity like standing and walking rather than sport. An hour of jogging burns around 500 to 700 kilocalories; your body at rest burns about 1,500 a day.
Useful: This explains why exercise alone changes daily energy use only so much.
