Body & HealthFact
A calorie is really a water temperature.
A kilocalorie is the energy needed to warm 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius, about 4.2 kilojoules. What food labels call a calorie is always this kilocalorie. The value used to be measured by burning food in a chamber and recording the temperature rise of the surrounding water. Today it is mostly calculated from composition.
Useful: 2,000 kilocalories a day works out to a continuous output of about 100 watts.
