Body & HealthMental model
Why you perk up in the morning after an all-nighter.
The two-process model explains sleepiness as the sum of two forces. Process S is sleep pressure: it builds with every waking hour, partly through adenosine, and drains during sleep. Process C is the internal clock: its alerting signal fades in the evening and bottoms out around 4 am. Together the two determine how tired you feel.
Useful: The second wind in the early morning is process C rising again while S stays high.
