Body & HealthFact
Your eye has a sensor that only sets the clock.
Alongside rods and cones, your retina has special ganglion cells containing the pigment melanopsin. They report brightness straight to the internal clock in the hypothalamus and are most sensitive to blue light around 480 nanometres. When it gets dark, the pineal gland releases melatonin, signalling night to the body. Bright light in the evening delays that release.
Useful: Bright morning light shifts your internal clock earlier, bright evening light shifts it later.
