Mind & EverydayHow it works
How your brain decides at night what you'll keep.
During deep sleep the hippocampus replays the day's activity patterns at high speed and gradually transfers them to the cortex. Studies in rats show the same cell sequences firing as when running a maze. That explains why a night of sleep after studying measurably improves recall, while an all-nighter noticeably weakens it.
Useful: Study before sleep, not through the night: sleep is part of learning.
