In dream sleep your body is almost completely paralysed.

During REM sleep motor neurons are actively inhibited: their membrane potential drops by 2 to 10 millivolts, so they barely fire. Only the eyes, the diaphragm and occasional twitches remain. REM makes up about 20 to 25 percent of adult sleep, roughly 90 to 120 minutes a night.

Useful: Without this brake you would physically act out your dreams.
