Mind & EverydayFact
Divers forgot underwater what they had learned on the beach.
In 1975 Godden and Baddeley had divers learn 36 words either on the beach or underwater, then recall them. Recall in the same setting was clearly better. The place becomes a retrieval cue. With recognition from a list the effect was much smaller than with free recall.
Useful: When something won't come back, mentally reconstructing the learning situation often helps.
