Why the city is several degrees warmer at night.

Asphalt, concrete and roofs store solar heat during the day and release it at night. Trees that cool by evaporation are missing, and waste heat from traffic and air conditioning adds up. City centres are typically 1–3 °C warmer than the surrounding countryside, and on clear nights the gap can reach 10 °C. This is the urban heat island.

Useful: During heatwaves, parks and water are the coolest spots in a city, often by several degrees.
