Science & TechHow it works
Without the greenhouse effect, Earth would be an ice ball.
Sunlight warms the ground, which sends the energy back as infrared radiation. Water vapor, CO₂ and methane let sunlight through but catch part of that infrared and radiate it back down. Without these gases, the average temperature would be about -18 °C instead of roughly +15 °C. The problem isn't the effect but its amplification.
Useful: More CO₂ means a thicker blanket. The Sun doesn't get hotter; Earth just sheds less heat.
