Science & TechFact
No wind turbine can harvest more than 59 percent of the wind.
In 1919 Albert Betz showed that a turbine can't stop the air completely, or it would pile up and nothing would flow through. The optimum leaves one third of the wind speed behind the rotor. That gives a physical ceiling of 16/27, or 59.3 % of the wind's energy. Modern turbines reach about 45 to 50 % at their best.
Useful: Wind power scales with the cube of speed: twice the wind means eight times the power.
