Science & TechFact
The Sun loses four million tonnes every second.
In the Sun's core, about 600 million tonnes of hydrogen fuse into helium every second. Roughly 0.7 % of that mass becomes energy via E = mc²: just over 4 million tonnes per second, a power output of 3.8 × 10²⁶ watts. Even so, in 4.6 billion years the Sun has shed only a tiny fraction of its mass.
Useful: Only about half a billionth of the Sun's output reaches Earth, and that is enough to power all life.
