One country votes on laws up to four times a year.
In Switzerland the people decide directly. With 50,000 signatures citizens can force a referendum on a law passed by parliament; with 100,000 they can put their own constitutional amendment to a vote. Voting takes place on up to four dates a year, often on several proposals at once. Since 1848 there have been several hundred national votes.
Useful: Direct democracy is not an ideal but a concrete procedure with deadlines and signature counts.
