A festival where a billion people light lamps.
Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs every autumn over about five days, usually in October or November by the lunar calendar. Its core: light triumphs over darkness, knowledge over ignorance. Families clean their homes, set out oil lamps (diyas), exchange sweets and light fireworks. In India it is the biggest holiday of the year.
Useful: For many, Diwali also marks the business new year, with fresh account books and gifts.
