Why Jewish holidays start the evening before.

In the Hebrew calendar a day begins at sunset, not at midnight. The Sabbath therefore starts on Friday evening and ends on Saturday after nightfall. The same pattern applies to holidays such as Yom Kippur. The calendar itself is lunisolar: seven leap months every 19 years keep the lunar months in step with the seasons.

Useful: If a holiday is listed "on the 12th", it means the evening of the 11th; that explains many scheduling mix-ups.
