Language & WorldFact
In India, a million is written 10,00,000.
The Indian numbering system has its own words: 1 lakh = 100,000, 1 crore = 10,000,000. Digits are grouped in twos after the first three, not in threes: 1,00,000 and 1,00,00,000. It is official in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. "3 crore rupees" therefore means 30 million, and an Indian newspaper writes "15 lakh" instead of 1.5 million.
Useful: When Indian media say "lakh" or "crore", think 10⁵ and 10⁷, not thousands.
