Language & WorldFact
In western China the sun sometimes rises at 10 a.m.
China spans roughly 5,000 km from east to west, geographically five time zones. Officially, since 1949, only Beijing Time (UTC+8) applies everywhere. In Kashgar in the far west, the winter sun therefore rises around 10 a.m. Many Uyghurs unofficially keep their own local time, two hours earlier.
Useful: Time zones are political decisions, not laws of nature.
