Language & WorldHow it works
How to unmask false friends before they embarrass you.
Three checks for a word that looks familiar: First, is it used in a context where the familiar meaning makes no sense? Second, do native speakers use a different, dissimilar word for the concept you expected? Third, is it a Latin loanword? Useful: For Latin-looking words, one quick dictionary check saves a red face.
