Why 'Gift' is deadly in German but lovely in English.

Both words share the same Germanic root meaning 'to give'. In German, Gift originally meant a present too, you can still see it in 'Mitgift' (dowry). Through the sense 'an administered dose', the word narrowed to lethal ones. English kept the friendly meaning; Swedish has both: 'gift' means poison and married.

Useful: A German 'Giftschrank' is a poison cabinet, not a gift cupboard.
