The German word Americans say every school day.
Friedrich Fröbel opened the first 'Kindergarten' in Bad Blankenburg in 1840: children should be tended like plants and grow. German emigrants brought the idea to America, where the first opened in 1856. Today the US pre-school year for five-year-olds is officially 'kindergarten', usually shortened to 'K' as in 'K-12'.
Useful: US kindergarten is one school year; a German Kindergarten starts at age three.
