Language & WorldFact
No English speaker understands the German 'Handy'.
'Handy' is a pseudo-anglicism: it sounds English, but English never used it for a mobile phone. Brits say mobile, Americans say cell phone; 'handy' means convenient. Other German inventions: Beamer (projector), Oldtimer (classic car), Public Viewing (in the US, a wake for the deceased), Smoking (tuxedo).
Useful: In London say 'mobile', or you'll get a puzzled look.
