Science & TechFact
The hottest planet is not the one closest to the Sun.
Mercury orbits nearest the Sun, yet Venus is hotter: 464 °C on average at the surface, even though it receives only a quarter of Mercury's sunlight. The reason is its atmosphere of 96.5 percent CO2, pressing on the ground at 93 bar and trapping heat like a blanket.
Useful: Venus is the extreme example of what a greenhouse effect without brakes does.
