Science & TechFact
On Uranus, polar night lasts 42 years.
Uranus rolls around the Sun almost on its side: its axis is tilted by about 98 degrees, versus 23 for Earth. One orbit takes 84 years, so each pole faces the Sun for roughly 42 years and then darkness for 42. The likely cause was a protoplanet larger than Earth striking Uranus 3 to 4 billion years ago.
Useful: Axial tilt explains seasons. At 98 degrees they become the extreme case.
