The internet lies on the seafloor, not in space.
The vast majority of intercontinental data traffic runs through fiber-optic cables on the ocean floor, not via satellites. Hundreds of such cables span the globe, some over 10,000 kilometers long and barely thicker than a garden hose. The first transatlantic telegraph cable worked as early as 1858, if only for a few weeks.
Useful: Fishing trawlers and ship anchors cause most cable breaks, earthquakes only a few; repair ships stand by.
