A shark older than the United States.
Greenland sharks live in the cold North Atlantic and grow less than a centimeter per year. In 2016, researchers radiocarbon-dated the eye lenses of 28 animals: the largest female was estimated at 392 years old, within a range of about 272 to 512 years. That makes it the longest-lived known vertebrate.
Useful: Cold water and a slow metabolism stretch life; they likely mature only around age 150.
