Science & TechHow it works
How your browser finds wikipedia.org.
Computers reach each other by numbers, the IP addresses. When you type a name, your device asks a DNS server, which acts like a phone book and returns the matching address. The lookup runs in stages: from the .org ending to the domain to the specific server. It usually takes milliseconds and gets cached.
Useful: If a page won't load even though the network works, DNS is often the culprit: try another server.
