Why the simplest strategy won a tournament full of tricks.
In the prisoner's dilemma betrayal pays in one round, but mutual cooperation pays both more over time. Robert Axelrod had programs play each other repeatedly. Tit for Tat won: cooperate first, then mirror exactly what the other did last. Nice, retaliating, forgiving after one move.
Useful: In repeated relationships, predictable fairness with a clear response beats cleverness.
