Creativity has two gears – don’t use both at once.
In 1956 psychologist J. P. Guilford distinguished divergent thinking – generating many possible answers – from convergent thinking – selecting the single best one. Both are needed, but not at the same time: judging while collecting ideas smothers them; still collecting while deciding means never finishing. Good creative processes separate the phases clearly.
Useful: Split the session in two: first 20 minutes of pure collecting, only then evaluate and choose.
