Odysseus had himself tied up because he didn't trust himself.

To hear the Sirens' song without drowning, Odysseus had himself bound to the mast and ordered his crew not to release him. A Ulysses pact is exactly that: your clear-headed self now binds your tempted self later. Examples: app blockers with a time lock, no sweets in the house, a standing order to savings on the first of the month.

Useful: Decide while you're clear-headed, and make it hard for your later self to undo.
