Highlighting and rereading: the most popular study methods work least.
In 2013 Dunlosky and colleagues rated ten learning techniques against hundreds of studies. Highlighting, underlining and rereading were graded "low utility". The winners: self-testing and spreading practice over time. The catch: rereading feels fluent and fakes mastery, while self-testing feels hard and actually works.
Useful: Replace the second read-through with flashcards or a summary from memory.
