Mind & EverydayFact
A spinning wheel changes how many African UN states you guess.
In 1974 Tversky and Kahneman spun a rigged wheel that stopped at 10 or 65. Participants then estimated the share of African countries in the UN: after a 10 the median guess was 25 percent, after a 65 it was about 45 percent. An obviously random number shifted answers by 20 percentage points.
Useful: In a negotiation, name your number first so you set the anchor.
