Body & HealthFact
A large share of your energy goes into sorting salt.
The sodium–potassium pump pushes three sodium ions out and two potassium ions in per ATP molecule consumed. Cells typically spend around 30 percent of their ATP on this, nerve cells up to 70 percent. The result is the electrical voltage without which no nerve fires and no muscle twitches.
Useful: A big part of your resting metabolism is rent for this constant ion sorting.
