Body & HealthHow it works
How your heart beats without orders from the brain.
In the right atrium sits the sinoatrial node, a cluster of cells that discharge electrically on their own about 60 to 100 times a minute. The impulse spreads across the atria to the AV node, is delayed there by around 0.1 seconds, then fires the ventricles. Nerves and hormones only adjust the tempo, not the beat itself.
Useful: That is why a transplanted heart keeps beating even though no nerve is connected to it.
