Body & HealthFact
Your fastest nerves outrun a high-speed train.
Thickly myelinated fibres conduct at up to 120 metres per second, about 430 kilometres per hour. Unmyelinated C fibres manage only 0.5 to 2 metres per second. That's why you feel the stubbed toe instantly and the dull, burning pain only a second later.
Useful: The double pain after a knock isn't imagination – it's two different cables.
